In its day, the Solidi, or Solidus, was a Roman gold coin. In the Byzantine area the coin was known as the Solidi. The coin was of pure gold and held its value for more than a thousand years, right up to the end of the empire. It kept its position as the most important gold coin throughout the Roman Empire until 1453, i.e. until the fall of Byzantium.
